ISWAP Financial Chief Surrenders in Borno

​MAIDUGURI — In what military authorities are hailing as a severe blow to extremist logistics, a high-ranking finance commander of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has laid down his arms and surrendered to military forces in Borno State alongside two of his teenage sons.

​Musa Usman, identified by the military as the Chief Finance Officer of the ISWAP enclave in Jubillaram, walked into custody on Saturday morning, July 25, 2026. Usman was responsible for directing the group’s financial transactions, resource allocation, and logistical supply chains.

​According to a statement released by Captain Mohammed Goni, Acting Military Information Officer for the Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI, the operation was executed following precise human intelligence gathered by the 24 Task Force Brigade.

​Acting on actionable tips regarding a planned defection along the Ladari–Jegarawaji–Tunokalia corridor on the strategic Gamboru–Wulgo Main Supply Route, troops from the 3 Battalion (Mechanised)—working in close coordination with the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and local Hybrid Forces—intercepted the militant at approximately 6:45 a.m.

​Usman arrived at the military checkpoint accompanied by his two sons, identified as 15-year-old Awwali Musa and 10-year-old Abubakar Musa.

​Upon his surrender, troops recovered a cache of weaponry and assets from the defecting commander, including one AK-47 rifle, four fully loaded magazines containing 101 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, a motorcycle utilized for transport, and N40,000 in cash.

​Defense analysts view the surrender of a core financial coordinator as a critical disruption to the operational stability of insurgent networks in the Lake Chad basin, potentially triggering further defections among rank-and-file fighters facing mounting pressure from sustained counter-terrorism campaigns.

​Preliminary debriefing and security profiling of the former ISWAP chief and his dependents are currently underway by military intelligence units.
