Gabonese international footballer Aaron Boupendza has tragically died at the age of 28 after falling from the 11th floor of a building in Hangzhou, China, where he played for Zhejiang FC. The Gabonese Football Federation (Fegafoot) confirmed his death and described him as “a great striker who made his mark” at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

Boupendza earned 35 caps for Gabon, scoring eight goals since his debut in 2016. His club career spanned several countries, including France, Turkey, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United States, Romania, and China. Notably, he was the top scorer for Turkish club Hatayspor in the 2020/21 season and played for FC Cincinnati in Major League Soccer, helping them win the Supporters’ Shield in 2023.
Gabon’s president, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, paid tribute to Boupendza, calling him “a talented centre-forward who brought honour to Gabonese football.” Fellow Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang also expressed his sorrow on social media, saying, “I don’t have the words. Rest in peace my brother.” Boupendza’s former clubs, including Hatayspor and FC Cincinnati, extended their condolences to his family and loved ones.
Authorities in China are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death, with Zhejiang FC cooperating fully with the investigation. Reports indicate that Boupendza was at his residence when the incident occurred.
Aaron Boupendza began his senior career with CF Mounana in Gabon, impressively scoring six goals in six appearances before moving to France’s Bordeaux and various loan spells. After a prolific period in Turkey, he continued his career across multiple leagues before joining Zhejiang FC in early 2025.
