IBADAN—Youths in Ibadan NorthWest Local Government Area have rejected demands by some party leaders for the automatic zoning of the 2027 House of Representatives ticket for Ibadan NorthWest/Ibadan SouthWest Federal Constituency to their area.
In a statement circulating online, the group described the push as “anti-merit and anti-competence,” clashing with Governor Seyi Makinde’s emphasis on loyalty and ability over sentiment. They recalled Makinde’s pledge that his successor would be chosen on merit, not parochial interests.
“The primary goal of a political party is to win elections and serve the people,” the statement read. “If the PDP truly seeks victory, electability and capacity must trump unproven agreements.”
Full Statement
“Our attention has been drawn to reports of a meeting where some leaders in Ibadan NorthWest called for automatic zoning of the House of Reps ticket to our LGA ahead of 2027.
“As committed youths building our party’s future, we state clearly that this does not reflect the views of many young people involved.
“Democracy thrives on competence, character, and voter confidence—not location or pressure.
“Governor Makinde’s leadership exemplifies fairness and merit; narrowing the choice to origin would betray that.
“Our constituency needs the best representation from a candidate with strength, popularity, credibility, and winnability.
“Elections demand broad appeal; ignoring this risks PDP’s chances.
“We appeal to Gov Makinde to assess all aspirants and select based on merit, popularity, and victory potential—not coercion.
“Give the ticket to the aspirant with widest support and strongest path to PDP triumph.
“We remain loyal PDP members and Makinde supporters, confident merit will unite and secure victory.”
The statement comes amid jostling for the seat held by PDP’s Shina Peller since 2023, with zoning debates intensifying as primaries near. PDP leaders in Oyo have yet to respond.
