The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced the temporary closure of Ibadan Airport, also known as Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport, in Oyo State. This closure, approved by the Federal Government, is to facilitate extensive upgrade works necessary to transform the airport from a domestic to an international facility.

According to a statement released by FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Obiageli Orah, the upgrade aligns with the Oyo State Government’s initiative to elevate the airport to international standards. The ongoing improvements and remodeling works necessitate the closure to ensure the safety of passengers and airport personnel, in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) regulations.
The Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has already closed the runway and suspended airport operations. The duration of the closure has not been specified, but FAAN assures that the upgrade is crucial for enhancing the airport’s infrastructure and operational standards.
