Jurgen Klopp concedes that during Sunday night’s 3-1 loss to Arsenal at the Emirates, Mikel Arteta outwitted him strategically.
As any other football manager does before a match, Klopp thought through a plan that he thought would see him come out on top at the Emirates.
That wasn’t the case, though. The German manager, who will leave Liverpool at the end of the current campaign, concurred that Arsenal was the superior team in that match and should have won.
After the game, Klopp said to Sky Sports, “We didn’t play enough football.” Our right triangle was entirely changed; we must adjust to it.
“We didn’t use Trent the way we wanted him to be used because we wanted Trent on the wing more in that particular situation. We weren’t really involved in the game enough.”
“There are a lot of ideas you had before the game that could have made it better, but in the end they didn’t.”
“We can concede that, on the whole, Arsenal is deserving of the three points. The situation was a little peculiar. Our objective was the same as it was in the cup game. We had even greater opportunities in the cup match.
“A goal is a little strange, even though we had zero shots on goal when we scored the goal at halftime. We had numerous opportunities today to adjust.
We managed to get into the game, and we had close calls and crosses before the second half. But Arsenal could get a little anxious if you can’t keep it open. The red card did not assist, so we had to make numerous changes to our attempts.
Although not many predicted Arsenal to defeat Liverpool, they did so with great ease. I suppose many Gunner supporters will look back on this matchup against the Reds and say, “This is where we won the league,” should the Gunners win the league in May.
Liverpool is under pressure now that they are only two points ahead of Arsenal after their loss. Who can stop Arsenal if they can defeat Liverpool, the most successful team in the league who hadn’t lost in fifteen straight games?
