Harare Clinic Flags High STI Surge with 40% of Patients HIV-Positive

​HARARE — Public health authorities in the capital have raised red flags over an escalating wave of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), with a high-volume community healthcare facility in Mabvuku reporting between 18 and 20 daily cases.

​Speaking during a recent institutional tour, medical practitioners at the Scottland Medical Centre and Maternity revealed that nearly 40 percent of patients seeking treatment for fresh STI complications are concurrently living with HIV.

​Dr. Albert Mudarikwa, a general practitioner at the facility, noted that the facility routinely integrates HIV screening protocols whenever patients present with symptoms.

​“Usually, when patients present with STIs, we first screen them for HIV because people living with HIV may be more vulnerable to certain infections, including STIs,” Dr. Mudarikwa explained.

​Youth Demographic Most Vulnerable

​Healthcare data emerging from the densely populated suburb underscores a troubling trend among young adults. Medical insights show that roughly 20 percent of individuals aged 18 to 24 are grappling with prominent bacterial and parasitic infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea, or trichomoniasis. Furthermore, clinical assessments indicate that roughly one in every four women treated at the center for abnormal vaginal discharge tests positive for gonorrhoea.

​While roughly half of the overall STI caseload tests negative for HIV, medical teams emphasize that the dual burden of overlapping infections presents profound public health challenges.

​In response to the mounting figures, the medical facility—which provides free primary care and maternity services to lower-income residents—has stepped up its grassroots mobilization. Health workers are deploying aggressive community outreach initiatives focused on destigmatizing testing, promoting barrier methods, and advocating for early clinical intervention.

​“We need to raise awareness about sexually transmitted infections and the importance of prevention, early testing, and treatment,” Dr. Mudarikwa urged, stressing that public education remains the most critical line of defense in cutting transmission chains across Harare.
