The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), is poised to host its 104th Inaugural Lecture on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at the Prof. Oluwafemi Balogun Ceremonial Building. The event will begin at 2:00 p.m., with seating starting at 1:30 p.m. The lecture will be delivered by Professor Bosede Sinmisola Sotiloye, a renowned expert in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) from the Communication and Language Studies Programme at the Institute of Communication and General Studies (ICGNS).

Titled “This ‘Weird’ English: Who is Afraid of Evolution?”, Prof. Sotiloye’s lecture promises to explore the dynamic nature of the English language, addressing its evolving characteristics and the challenges they pose to learners and educators alike. A distinguished academic, Prof. Sotiloye has an extensive background including a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Ilorin, and she has significantly contributed to research in English language teaching and linguistic studies.

The Vice-Chancellor of FUNAAB, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, will serve as the Chief Host for the lecture. Members of the university community and the general public are warmly invited to attend the event in person. For those unable to be physically present, the lecture will also be available via live streaming through the university’s official channels.

Prof. Sotiloye, who became a full Professor in 2018, has published numerous scholarly works on language and linguistics, focusing on practical approaches to teaching English and language evolution. Her extensive academic and research career reflects her dedication to enhancing English language education in Nigeria.

Prof. Sotiloye is a former Deputy Dean, College of Agricultural Management and Rural Development (COLAMRUD). She is a member of many associations, such as National Association of Teachers and Researchers of English as a Second Language, Reading Association of Nigeria, National Association of University Women, Linguistics Association of Nigeria and International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language.

She had her primary education at St. James’ C.A.C. Primary School, Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria from where she proceeded to St. Louis Grammar School, Mokola, Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria from 1973-77 for her secondary education. She obtained her B.A. (English), M.A. (Linguistics), and Ph.D (Linguistics) in 1984, 1987, and 1997 respectively, from the University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria.

She is happily married to Dr Oladapo. S. Sotiloye, former Chief Medical Director, Federal Medical Centre, Idi- Aba, Abeokuta and a Senior Pastor with the Redeemed Christian Church of God. They are both blessed with wonderful children and grandchildren.

This inaugural lecture continues FUNAAB’s tradition of academic excellence and intellectual engagement, providing a platform for professors to share their research insights with a broader audience.
