Port Harcourt, Rivers State – In a significant development that signals a potential shift in the ongoing political turmoil in Rivers State, suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara has publicly apologized to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

“I apologize to my Oga, Honourable Minister Nyesom Wike,” Fubara reportedly stated. “I was misled by hungry so-called elders, aides and supporters. They kept pushing me until I nearly lost my soul. I am wiser now and ready to work with my lifetime oga to make Rivers work. My oga helped me get to the government house, I was a nobody until he assisted me and I disappointed him. I am sorry!”
This statement comes amidst a prolonged and highly publicized political crisis that has gripped Rivers State, marked by a bitter feud between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. The crisis has led to:
- Presidential Intervention: President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18, 2025, and suspended Fubara, his deputy, and the state lawmakers for an initial period of six months.
- Legal Challenges: The suspension has faced legal challenges, with PDP governors taking the case to the supreme court.
- Continued Tensions: Despite reconciliatory moves, tensions remain, with Wike emphasizing the need for Fubara to demonstrate his commitment to peace through concrete actions.
- Reports of Fubara stating that he is not desperate to return to office, and that his “spirit has left the government house long ago.”
The political crisis stems from a breakdown in the relationship between Fubara and Wike, who played a crucial role in Fubara’s ascent to the governorship. The recent apology suggests a move towards reconciliation, although the situation remains complex.
Observers are now watching closely to see how this apology will impact the political landscape in Rivers State and whether it will lead to a lasting resolution of the crisis.
