Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers State has issued a stark warning regarding the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). He argues that ignoring judicial decisions to release Kanu could provoke significant unrest among the Igbo population and potentially lead to violent repercussions from Niger Delta militants, many of whom are Igbo. Fubara emphasizes that the federal government’s inaction could result in a total shutdown of oil operations in Nigeria, which would have dire economic consequences.

Fubara’s statement comes amid ongoing legal turmoil surrounding Kanu’s trial, which has faced delays and adjournments due to allegations of bias against the presiding judge, Justice Binta Nyako. Following these developments, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court reassigned Kanu’s case to a new judge to ensure a fair trial. The governor insists that releasing Kanu is crucial for maintaining peace and preventing a potential catastrophe in Nigeria.
