ABUJA — Reigning world champions Argentina have successfully defended their crown at the pinnacle of international football, maintaining the number one spot in the latest FIFA Men’s World Rankings released by the world football governing body on Thursday.
The global rankings offer a critical benchmark for national teams as preparation reaches a fever pitch for the expanded, 48-team 2026 FIFA World Cup, jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
While Argentina continues to fortify its status at the summit following a string of dominant international fixtures, the European heavyweights saw minor shifts just below them. Spain climbed into second place on the back of a resilient run featuring a draw and a victory in recent outings, while France slipped to third globally after a temporary stumble, despite recovering well with subsequent wins. England and Portugal complete the top five.
Super Eagles Maintain Safe Flight at 26th
Nigeria’s Super Eagles held their ground, retaining the 26th position globally. The three-time African champions experienced a highly active and mixed international window under manager Éric Chelle.
The Eagles put on an impressive display during the Unity Cup invitational tournament held in London, securing back-to-back clean-sheet victories by defeating Zimbabwe 2-0 and sweeping past Jamaica 3-0.
However, the team faced tougher tests in subsequent international friendlies on European soil. They played out an entertaining 2-2 draw against Poland in Warsaw, before suffering a narrow 2-1 defeat to Portugal in Leiria on Wednesday night. Despite the loss to the Portuguese side, pundits have noted encouraging structural progression in the squad ahead of critical competitive fixtures.
Morocco Spearheads African Contingent
On the continental front, Morocco continues its historic rise, occupying the 7th spot globally and maintaining its status as Africa’s highest-ranked nation. Senegal closely follows in the 14th spot, leaving Nigeria as the third-best team on the continent.
