FIFA president Gianni Infantino is facing the most severe crisis of his 11-year tenure after Jordan Football Association President Prince Ali bin Hussein publicly accused him of political blackmail.

The explosive allegation comes on the heels of a leaked plan to sell £3.1 billion in World Cup equity stakes. The controversial proposal triggered immediate international backlash, an internal revolt among top executives, and threats of a global tournament boycott before being swiftly scrapped.

A Damning Public Accusation

Taking to social media to air his grievances, Prince Ali—a former FIFA vice-president who previously challenged for the presidency—ripped into the organization’s leadership. He revealed that Jordan’s historic first appearance at the World Cup was marred by severe administrative hurdles, exorbitant ticket pricing, visa blockades for fans, and heavy U.S. government taxation on participation money that was not levied against teams based in co-hosts Canada and Mexico.

Furthermore, Prince Ali stated that FIFA has deliberately withheld crucial reward money owed to players since December following Jordan’s run to the final of the FIFA Arab Cup in Qatar.

The Jordan FA chief claimed that these outstanding issues were weaponized against him:

”For months, FIFA has been refusing to help us on any of these or other matters—until it was verbally communicated to me during the World Cup that if I endorsed Infantino it would go a long way to helping our FA out. We pride ourselves in Jordan in upholding ethical values. We did not endorse him before and certainly will not now. But the whole situation amounts to blackmail and we refuse to give in to that.”

Mounting Pressure for Resignation

Jordan’s decision to break ranks makes them the first Asian member association to rebel against the embattled Swiss administrator. It pushes the total count of defiant nations to 91, fueled by robust lack-of-confidence motions already declared by both UEFA and CONCACAF. Deposing Infantino requires a threshold of 106 member nations.

In response to the escalating fallout, Infantino has summoned senior FIFA officials to emergency crisis talks in Morocco. With top advisors resigning and key figures like Arsène Wenger and Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom publicly distancing themselves from the failed private equity scheme, Infantino’s grip on global football appears increasingly fragile.
