FG Reopens Push For Online Birth, Death Registration Nationwide

Nigerians no longer need to queue at government offices to register a birth or a death.The National Orientation Agency renewed that message on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, ValidViewNetwork reports. Checks by ValidViewNetwork confirm the agency was reminding citizens about an existing digital registration platform.

ValidViewNetwork reports that officials described the self-service portal as designed to cut queues and paperwork.

“Getting a birth or death certificate in Nigeria just got easier,” the agency said.

Applicants can now register births, notify deaths, or correct records without visiting an NPC office.

How Nigerians Can Apply Online

Applicants can register births through the NPC’s dedicated self-service birth registration portal. Death notifications go through a separate NPC portal built for that purpose.

The agency encouraged Nigerians unable to access either portal to visit any registration centre nationwide.

The Platform Behind The Push

The NOA’s reminder points back to VitalReg, a platform the NPC launched earlier this year. NPC Chairman Dr Aminu Yusuf unveiled VitalReg at a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, July 1, 2026.

The platform runs under the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics system. It went live that same day across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The Numbers Behind The Reform

Nigeria records about five million births every year, Yusuf said at the July 1, 2026 briefing. Birth registration coverage currently stands at roughly 57 per cent nationwide, findings show. Death registration remains far lower, sitting below 20 per cent across the country.

The commission has built 4,011 registration centres across the country’s 774 local government areas, ValidViewNetwork gathered, with plans to expand toward 8,000.Nigeria’s five million yearly births have long outpaced its ability to record them on paper.

Tuesday’s renewed push suggests the government now wants ordinary citizens, not just officials, driving that number up. Success will depend less on the platform’s design than on whether Nigerians actually use it.

For a country where legal identity still eludes millions, adoption remains the real test.
