FG Orders 24-Hour Watch After Utako Tremor

​ABUJA — Residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have been urged to remain calm following a mild earth tremor that rattled parts of the capital city.

​The seismic event, which occurred on Tuesday morning at precisely 11:23:27 a.m., was captured by the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) Seismic Monitoring Station located in Utako. According to scientific data released by the agency, the ground movement originated at a shallow depth of one kilometer and propagated across a four-kilometer radius over a brief duration of five seconds.

​The NGSA classified the occurrence as a light surface event measuring between Level I and II on the Modified Mercalli scale. Authorities explained that such intensity levels typically describe minor vibrations that cause momentary discomfort or surprise, carrying zero threat to structural integrity, human lives, or property.

​In response to the incident, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, who is currently on an official engagement in Washington, D.C., directed the NGSA to initiate hourly updates and continuous seismic surveillance across the capital.

​Speaking through his Special Assistant on Media, Lara Owoeye-Wise, the Minister assured the public that proactive monitoring measures are fully activated. He encouraged FCT residents to dismiss panic and continue with their daily commercial and social routines without anxiety.
