Ondo Approves 240kW Solar Plant for UNIMEDTH to Guarantee 24-Hour Power

​AKURE — In a decisive move to combat escalating energy overheads and upgrade public health infrastructure, the Ondo State Government has greenlit the immediate installation of a 240kW solar power system at the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH).

​The initiative is engineered to anchor a seamless, uninterrupted 24-hour electricity supply across critical departments, insulating sensitive medical apparatuses from power fluctuations and driving optimal patient care outcomes.

​The Honourable Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Engr. (Dr.) Johnson Alabi, made the disclosure during a media briefing in Akure, highlighting that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa sanctioned the intervention to counteract soaring electricity tariffs burdening public health facilities.

​”To achieve the goal of affordable and quality healthcare services, Mr. Governor has approved this alternative energy solution to reduce the hospital’s electricity costs. This strategic investment will ease the financial burden of energy expenses while enabling the institution to channel more resources towards improved healthcare delivery,” Engr. Alabi stated.

​Cutting Costs, Protecting Equipment

​Health administrators have long grappled with the unsustainable expenditures tied to conventional power grids and fossil-fuel generators. By shifting a significant portion of UNIMEDTH’s energy demands to clean solar power, the state expects to redirect saved capital into medical procurement, pharmaceutical supplies, and frontline service delivery.

​Furthermore, stable electricity is vital for preserving diagnostic machines, laboratory units, and intensive care hardware that suffer frequent damage from unstable grid voltages.

​Timeline to Commissioning

​Following the Governor’s executive approval, project engineers and contractors have initiated site preparations and logistics mobilization. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has set an aggressive execution window, targeting full project commissioning within the first month of the final quarter of the year.

​State officials remain confident that the renewable energy upgrade will serve as a blueprint for sustainable infrastructural development across other public utilities in Ondo State.
