Feminist Trailblazer Gloria Steinem Dies at 92

​Gloria Steinem, the journalist, author, and fierce architect of the modern women’s liberation movement who transformed second-wave feminism from a fringe concept into a global paradigm shift, has died at the age of 92.

​Her representatives announced that Steinem passed away peacefully on Wednesday at her home in New York City, surrounded by loved ones.

​For more than six decades, Steinem’s distinctive look—trademark streaked hair and oversized aviator glasses—was synonymous with the fight for gender equality. Rising to national prominence in 1963 with an explosive undercover expose of New York’s Playboy Club, she quickly realized that traditional journalism was only scratching the surface of systemic misogyny. A pivotal 1969 abortion-rights speak-out galvanized her shift from observer to activist, laying the groundwork for a lifetime spent on the road crossing the globe to organize, lecture, and listen.
