The Federal Government has approved a major upward review of hazard allowances and earned benefits for members of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) in federal universities, scaling senior workers’ annual hazard pay up to N486,000.
The new remuneration package, which implements a 35 percent general increase across eligible salary grades, takes effect retrospectively from January 1, 2026. It follows a formal agreement struck between the Federal Government and the union on June 29, 2026.
The adjustments were formally communicated through an official circular dated July 20, 2026, signed by the Acting Secretary of the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC), Adighiogu A. Chiadi. The document was distributed to key government offices, including the Chief of Staff to the President, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, and the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.
Key Highlights of the New Package
- Hazard Allowances: For junior employees on CONTISS 1-5, annual laboratory, workshop, and studio hazard allowances rise from N180,000 to N243,000. For senior workers on CONTISS 6-15, the allowance increases by N126,000, moving from N360,000 to N486,000 annually.
- Responsibility Allowances: Senior administration adjustments include an increase for registrars and bursars to N840,000 annually (N70,000 monthly). Directors will receive a newly instituted responsibility allowance of N600,000 annually (N50,000 monthly), while deputy registrars, deputy bursars, and deputy directors are approved for N480,000 annually. Heads of departments/units and sections also receive scaled increases.
- Uniform & Protective Gear: A newly introduced annual uniform and protective wear allowance grants N80,000 to eligible laboratory, workshop, and studio personnel across all salary tiers.
- Field Trips & Practical Supervision: Allowances covering field trips, teaching practice, industrial supervision, and the Students Work Experience Programme (SWEP) have been adjusted upward across various CONTISS brackets.
The sweeping review aims to buffer university non-teaching personnel against ongoing inflationary pressures and secure long-term industrial harmony across public tertiary institutions.
