Father Kills Wife,Six Children,and Self in Grand Haven Township

​GRAND HAVEN TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Investigators have confirmed that a Michigan man fatally shot his wife and their six children before taking his own life and setting fire to their home last week.

​The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department announced Monday that autopsies revealed Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, shot and killed his 39-year-old wife, Amanda, and their children, aged 5 to 15, inside their residence on Friday, July 24. Emergency responders discovered the bodies after being summoned to the property for a house fire.

​According to authorities, the blaze was intentionally set in multiple areas of the home following the killings. The family’s dogs and at least one cat also perished in the fire.

​Officials initially responded to the neighborhood Monday morning following reports of a smoky smell, but found nothing at the time. They returned approximately three hours later after receiving additional calls, observed smoke billowing from the structure, and made the grim discovery.

​”This is an unspeakable tragedy that we may never completely understand,” Sheriff Eric DeBoer said in a statement read by Capt. Jacob Sparks during a news conference.

​Amanda Karolkiewicz, known to friends as Mandy, worked as an elementary school substitute teacher for the Grand Haven Area Public Schools system. In a joint statement, her mother and stepfather, Becky and Steve Lawwill, remembered her as a devoted mother and educator.

​”We treasured every moment we had with her and her six children, and words cannot adequately address our devastation,” they wrote, asking for privacy and prayer.

​Kristopher Karolkiewicz had recently worked as a vice president of sales and marketing for the American Heart Association from September 2023 until his employment ended earlier this month, an organization spokesperson confirmed.

​The couple married in August 2009 after meeting at a beverage company the previous year. Over the years, their family grew to include six children—both biological and adopted—ranging from kindergarten age to adolescence.

​Friends of the family have established a GoFundMe campaign to assist with memorial and related expenses, as well as to fund a scholarship in honor of the children.
