In a tradition spanning over two decades of academic excellence, 15-year-old Etiyemonu Esther has officially stepped into the shoes of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, serving as the ceremonial “One-Day Governor” of Lagos State.
The student of Lagos State Senior Model College, Igbokuta, earned the prestigious honor after out-spelling dozens of peers to emerge as the overall winner of the 21st Lagos State Spelling Bee Competition in December 2025. Her “tenure” began on Monday at the Lagos House, Marina, where Governor Sanwo-Olu formally handed over his seat in a symbolic gesture that has become a hallmark of the state’s commitment to youth leadership.
A Legacy of Excellence
Receiving the young “Governor,” Sanwo-Olu expressed profound pride in her intellectual prowess and character.
”Today, I received Miss Etiyemonu Esther, a brilliant student who represents the very best of our youth,” the Governor stated. “Her confidence, focus, and hard work stand out. All of Lagos is rooting for her bright future.”
Esther was accompanied by her “Cabinet,” including One-Day Deputy Governor, Miss Awoyemi Dorcas, and One-Day Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Miss Salami Jumai Olaide. Notably, all three top winners represented Education District II, marking a clean sweep for the district in the 2025 competition.
From Spelling Bee to Statecraft
During her visit, Esther did not just occupy the seat; she used the platform to advocate for her community. Earlier in her tour of state agencies, she commended the Sanwo-Olu administration’s progress in education and transportation while making a passionate appeal for a new school bus for her college in Igbokuta, noting the logistical challenges faced by students in the outskirts of Imota.
The “One-Day Governor” initiative, founded in 2001 by the then-First Lady of Lagos and current First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, through her New Era Foundation, continues to serve as a catalyst for student ambition. Sanwo-Olu took a moment to laud Senator Tinubu for the enduring legacy of the program, which has produced dozens of young leaders who have gone on to excel in various professional fields.
Rewards for Brilliance
Beyond the ceremonial seat, Esther’s victory in the 21st edition of the contest came with significant rewards:
- A N1,000,000 cash prize.
- A full scholarship for her tertiary education.
- An all-expenses-paid cultural exchange trip (traditionally awarded to the top winners).
The event serves as a reminder that in Lagos, academic dedication remains the shortest path to the corridors of power—even if only for 24 hours.
