
LISBON — Her Excellency Erelu Angela Adebayo has officially assumed her diplomatic duties in Lisbon following the formal presentation of her Letters of Credence to the President of the Portuguese Republic, António José Seguro.
The ceremony, held on Monday at the historic Belém Palace, marks the official commencement of Ambassador Adebayo’s tenure as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Portugal. The engagement underscores a shared resolve to fortify the longstanding diplomatic architecture connecting Abuja and Lisbon, which remains rooted in mutual respect and robust cooperation.

Strengthening Bilateral and Economic Horizons
During her audience with President Seguro, Ambassador Adebayo delivered warm felicitations from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the people of Nigeria. Discussions centered on expanding the existing bilateral framework into high-impact sectors, with particular emphasis on:
- Trade and Investment: Enhancing private-sector collaboration and opening new channels for economic exchange.
- Maritime Security & Energy: Fortifying strategic partnerships to address shared security challenges and optimize energy cooperation.
- Agriculture & Education: Fostering technical collaboration, knowledge transfer, and institutional capacity-building.
- Culture and Tourism: Deepening people-to-people connections through cultural exchange initiatives.
Furthermore, the dialogue addressed pressing multilateral priorities, including regional peace and security, climate action, sustainable development, and the broader framework of the Africa–European Union Partnership.

President Seguro welcomed Ambassador Adebayo to Portugal, acknowledging Nigeria’s pivotal position as a strategic anchor in Africa and an indispensable partner in bridging cooperation between the African continent and Europe.

Looking ahead, Ambassador Adebayo emphasized her commitment to engaging actively with the Portuguese government, the local diplomatic corps, the private sector, and the Nigerian diaspora in Portugal to consolidate bilateral gains and unlock new avenues for mutually beneficial growth.
