ENUGU – A gruesome discovery has plunged Enugu State into shock and outrage, as a purported native doctor has been apprehended in connection with the alleged burying alive of multiple victims, including a pregnant woman, in a soakaway pit. The horrifying revelations have sparked a public outcry and ignited a fierce debate about the destruction of potential evidence at the crime scene.
While official details from law enforcement remain sparse, reliable sources indicate the arrest follows a period of intense public scrutiny, particularly regarding the native doctor’s inexplicably lavish lifestyle, which included a recently extravagant wedding ceremony. This ostentatious display of wealth, now starkly contrasted with the horrific accusations, has fueled public anger and renewed calls for accountability for those exhibiting unexplained riches.
The incident has triggered a wave of condemnation regarding the swift and seemingly impulsive demolition of the suspect’s houses and the burning of his cars. Critics argue that this immediate destruction of property, while understandable in the throes of public anger, amounts to a severe setback for proper criminal investigation.
“The demolition of the native doctor’s houses in Enugu without first carrying out proper forensic examination on the building shows how backward and reactive we think and act as a people,” lamented one concerned citizen. “Houses where corpses were found in pits covered with concrete work with rods are horridly demolished out of anger without proper investigations. No stone should have been left unturned, even the slightest.”
Concerns have been raised about the potential loss of crucial evidence that could have been gleaned from the demolished structures and burnt vehicles. Experts point to the possibility of finding receipts, contacts, diaries, fingerprints, traceable bloodstains, and special phones containing call logs that could expose accomplices, victims, and the broader network involved in these heinous crimes.

“When incidents like this happen, it is also an opportunity to study the modus operandi of these criminals, track all persons involved and get them to book, thereby discouraging such crimes and forestalling future occurrences,” another commentator stated. “But the black man in us can never reason properly. Evidences are being destroyed, leads are not followed, etc. How on earth do we hope to stop or reduce organized crimes with these reactive approaches to fighting crimes in Nigeria?”
The public is also questioning efforts to identify the victims and link them to missing persons reports. Furthermore, videos circulating online purportedly showing the native doctor dancing with occultic members in matching uniforms and spraying money have raised questions about whether a dedicated team is tracking down these individuals.

This disturbing incident underscores a recurring concern in Nigeria about ritual killings and human sacrifice, often perpetrated by individuals masquerading as spiritual healers. Just recently, in October 2024, a native doctor and an accomplice were arrested in Enugu after a man died during a “fortification ritual” where he was reportedly buried in a coffin. These cases highlight the urgent need for more sophisticated and professional crime-fighting strategies.
