Enugu, Nigeria – The Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu is poised to reopen for flight operations this coming Monday, April 28th, 2025, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) announced on Saturday. This development follows the swift completion of emergency repairs to a critical section of the airport’s runway.
Obiageli Orah, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs & Consumer Protection, confirmed the reopening to journalists, stating that the agency’s engineers have certified the runway as safe and suitable for both landings and takeoffs.
The unscheduled repair work became necessary after a “sudden and significant rupture” was discovered on the asphalt surface of the runway on April 18th, 2025. Consequently, FAAN announced an immediate shutdown of the airport, with repairs initially slated to commence on April 22nd and extend until May 6th, 2025.
However, demonstrating an expedited effort, FAAN has now confirmed the successful completion of the rehabilitation works ahead of schedule.
“The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, Enugu State, will reopen for flight operations on Monday, 28th April 2025, following the completion of emergency runway repairs,” stated Orah. “Rehabilitation works on the runway have been completed, and the runway is cleared for landings and takeoffs by the engineers working with FAAN.”
FAAN expressed its gratitude to airport users and stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation during the period of closure. The Authority also extended a “sincere apology” for the inconvenience caused, reassuring the public that the swift action was taken with the utmost consideration for safety.
The reopening of Enugu Airport on Monday is expected to restore crucial air travel connectivity to the southeastern region of Nigeria.
