MAIDUGURI — The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has stepped up its anti-corruption campaign in the Northeast, arraigning Muhammad Korimi Abdullahi before Justice Maina Lawan of the Borno State High Court.
Abdullahi faces a six-count charge relating to criminal breach of trust involving a staggering N186,000,000.00.
According to the Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the commission, the case stems from a breach of agreement after the multi-million naira sum was handed to the defendant for safekeeping. Rather than safeguarding the funds, Abdullahi allegedly diverted the entire amount for personal use.
During Tuesday’s court session, prosecuting counsel N.T. Iko detailed specific transactions, highlighting a count where the defendant received N30,000,000.00 via electronic transfer on February 14, 2024, only to dishonestly misappropriate it.
The prosecution noted that the offence runs contrary to Section 299 of the Borno State Penal Code Law and Other Matters Connected Therewith Law, 2023, and is punishable under Section 300 of the same legislation.
When the six counts were read to him, the defendant entered a plea of “not guilty.”
In light of the plea, the prosecution prayed the court for a trial date and requested that the defendant be remanded in custody. Justice Lawan granted the application, ordering that Abdullahi be remanded at the Maiduguri Maximum Correctional Centre.
The trial has been adjourned to September 7, 2026, where substantive hearings are expected to commence.
