Edinburgh Court Jails Nigerian National Over Brutal Street Stabbing of Ex-Wife

​EDINBURGH — A 26-year-old Nigerian national has been sentenced to seven and a half years behind bars after carrying out a brutal, pre-planned knife attack on his estranged wife in broad daylight, unfolding directly in front of their young child.

​Osarenkhoe Atutie appeared before the High Court in Glasgow on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, where he received his sentence following an earlier guilty plea. Presiding judge Lord Cubie also slapped the offender with a lifelong non-harassment order, barring him from making any future contact with the victim.

​The harrowing incident occurred on the afternoon of Tuesday, November 11, 2025, along Duke Street in the Leith area of Edinburgh. According to court proceedings, Atutie approached the mother of his child under the guise of familial affection, briefly hugging his daughter before suddenly unleashing a vicious, sustained assault on the 30-year-old woman with a blade.

​Victory Atutie suffered a catastrophic total of 12 separate stab wounds, which included a collapsed lung and permanent, severe facial scarring. Prosecutors noted that she owes her life entirely to a combination of sheer fortune and the swift intervention of courageous bystanders who rushed in to stop the carnage.

​Investigators established that the couple had originally married in Nigeria roughly four years prior to the incident, subsequently relocating to London, where their child was born. Following the ultimate collapse of their marriage, Mrs. Atutie relocated north to Edinburgh with their daughter to seek a fresh start.

​However, Atutie tracked them down to the Scottish capital—a calculated move that Lord Cubie highlighted as evidence of chilling premeditation.

​”She could have died,” Lord Cubie stated during the sentencing hearing, condemning the defendant for a calculated onslaught against a completely defenceless victim.

​Atutie will now serve his custodial sentence in a Scottish prison before facing potential deportation proceedings upon his eventual release.
