On Sunday, Internet connectivity faced disruptions in various East African nations due to reported faults on the East African Submarine Cable System (EASSy) and SEACOM cables, according to Internet monitoring groups.
NetBlocks highlighted the disruption on X (formerly Twitter), noting that multiple East African countries, including Tanzania and the French Island of Mayotte, experienced significant impacts on Internet connectivity, while Mozambique and Malawi saw medium impacts.
Cloudflare, another Internet firm, also confirmed on X the ongoing connectivity disruptions in Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, and Madagascar.
Kenya’s largest telecoms operator, Safaricom, activated redundancy measures to minimize service interruption for subscribers as they awaited full restoration of the cables. However, the telecom operator cautioned that subscribers might experience reduced Internet speeds.
Earlier in March, West African countries, including Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Benin, Ghana, and Burkina Faso, as well as South Africa, reported Internet outages due to damage to four sub-sea cables off the west coast of Africa.

These cables included the West Africa Cable System, MainOne, South Atlantic 3, and ACE sea cables, critical for telecommunications data.
Chris Wood, CEO of West Indian Ocean Cable Company, estimated collective repair costs of around $8 million for the four affected digital infrastructure companies. He explained that the cable firms might need to allocate between $1 million and $2 million for the complete restoration of a single subsea cable, depending on the severity of the damage incurred.
