Gift of Chess, a non-profit organization based in New York aiming to distribute chess sets globally, disclosed that Nigerian chess master Tunde Onakoya encountered severe vomiting and stomach pain on Thursday during his ongoing marathon but persisted without giving up.
Onakoya, alongside his United States counterpart Shawn Martinez, is endeavoring to set the Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon at New York City’s Times Square.
The event is set to conclude on Friday, April 19.

Gift of Chess shared on X, “That’s #Tunde_OD curled over in pain. Yesterday, we did not think we could continue, as he was experiencing intense vomiting and stomach pain.
“When faced with the option to quit, he said, ‘I will play on for the dreams of millions of children.’
“Tunde has never abandoned the kids. Let’s not abandon him. To all who have liked a photo, we now ask you to donate.”
Onakoya aims to engage in uninterrupted play for 58 hours against Martinez, with the objective of raising $1,000,000 to support children across Africa.
