80 Militants Surrender Arms in Cross River Amnesty Triumph

Cross River State achieved a landmark victory against militancy on Friday, January 16, 2026, as 80 fighters voluntarily surrendered their weapons in Akpabuyo Local Government Area. This event unfolded at Atimbo Rear Area under Operation OKWOK, highlighting the success of the state’s amnesty initiative backed by military pressure.

Troops from the 13 Brigade Nigerian Army oversaw the process, where militants emerged from hiding in the creeks to embrace peace. Brigadier General PO Alimikhena, the Brigade Commander, praised the development as a “major confidence-building milestone,” crediting combined military operations, state government collaboration, and security agency efforts.

• ThankGod Ebikontei (alias Ayibanuagha) brought 39 fighters from his group.​
• John Isaac (alias Akpokolo), leader of the Akpokolo Marine Forces or Border Boys, presented 41 members.​

Arms and Items Surrendered

The militants handed over a significant arsenal, reducing threats in the region.

• Firearms: 3 AK-47 rifles, 2 pump action guns, 1 Mark 4 rifle, 1 G3 rifle, 12 single-barrel guns.​
• Ammunition and accessories: 10 AK-47 magazines, 19 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammo, 84 DENGUN cartridges.​
• Other assets: 3 speed boats, 4 boat engines, 1 C4 explosive charge, assorted kits, tools, and locally made weapons.​

Following profiling by the Department of State Services at Muka Sam Hotel in Calabar’s Ikot Ansa, the ex-militants were transferred to the Cross River State Government’s Rapid Response Team. Governor Senator Bassey Edet Otu earned commendation for his proactive role in fostering this civil-military partnership.
