A correspondent from Abubakar Rimi Television stationed at the Kano State Government House, Naziru Idris Ya’u, narrowly escaped a life-threatening situation on Friday evening after being struck by a stray bullet at the Government House.
The incident occurred around 6:30 pm, and as of Saturday morning, authorities have yet to determine the source of the stray bullet.
Both security personnel and Government House officials have refrained from commenting on the matter.
Nazir Ya’u was promptly taken to the Government House clinic for medical attention following the incident.
Medical staff at the clinic mentioned that the reporter was fortunate as the bullet did not hit him at close range.
Subsequently, the police attached to the Government House initiated an investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident.
As of the time of compiling this report, neither the Kano Government House nor the State Police Command has issued an official statement regarding the shooting.
Efforts to reach the Director General of Media and Publicity, Sanusi Tofa, were unsuccessful as he declined multiple phone calls from our correspondent.
However, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Police Command, SP Haruna Abdullahi, stated that the incident had not been reported to the command and pledged to investigate the matter.
In response to initial reports, the Kano State Government refuted claims that journalist Naziru Idris Ya’u was injured by a stray bullet at the Government House.
Director General of Media and Publicity, Sanusi Tofa, clarified that the journalist sustained injuries from metal debris originating from ongoing construction activities at the Government House, an area barricaded for safety reasons.
Medical professionals at the Government House clinic confirmed the nature of Naziru’s injuries, dispelling the notion of a stray bullet hitting him.
The government assured the safety of journalists stationed at the Government House while advising them to verify sources and refrain from sensational reporting.
Safety protocols will be reviewed and enhanced to prevent similar incidents in the future as investigations into the incident continue.
