Charlie Kirk, prominent conservative activist and co-founder of Turning Point USA, was shot in the neck Wednesday during a public speaking engagement at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. The shooting took place around 12:10 p.m. local time as Kirk was addressing an audience from an outdoor tent at the university’s Sorensen Center courtyard.
According to university officials and multiple eyewitness accounts, a single gunshot was fired from a nearby building approximately 200 yards away, catching Kirk off guard. Videos circulating on social media captured the moment—the loud crack of the gunshot followed by Kirk reaching for his neck, which was bleeding heavily. Security quickly escorted him from the scene to receive urgent medical treatment. He is currently hospitalized in critical condition.
Utah Valley University swiftly locked down the campus and confirmed that the suspect was apprehended by police and is in custody while an active investigation is underway. FBI agents have also joined local authorities at the scene to assist.
Kirk, widely known as a staunch ally of former President Donald Trump and influential voice among young conservatives, was participating in an event branded as the “American Comeback Tour,” aimed at rallying conservative youth. Trump himself called for prayers for Kirk’s recovery on social media, calling him “a great guy from top to bottom.”
The shooting has sent shockwaves nationally amid rising concerns over politically motivated violence in the United States. Bipartisan political leaders and public figures condemned the attack. California Governor Gavin Newsom described it as “disgusting, vile, and reprehensible,” while House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries emphasized that “political violence is NEVER acceptable.” Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who survived an assassination attempt in 2011, also issued a statement urging Americans to reject violence as a means of political discourse.
Eyewitness reports indicated that security at the event was minimal, with some attendees walking freely into the venue before the shooting. Former Utah Republican Congressman Jason Chaffetz expressed shock, stating, “Utah is one of the safest places on the planet. We just don’t have these types of things.”
As the nation watches closely, prayers and thoughts remain with Kirk and those affected at Utah Valley University. Further updates will follow as authorities continue their investigation.
