Renowned Nigerian security and intelligence expert, retired Commodore Kunle Olawunmi, has added another remarkable milestone to his distinguished career with his conferment as Senior Fellow of the African Security Forum(ASF).

The Forum is one of the continent’s foremost strategic platforms dedicated to advancing peace, security and intelligence collaboration across Africa.

The honour, conferred in recognition of his exceptional contributions to Africa’s security landscape, further cements Olawunmi’s growing reputation as one of the continent’s most respected authorities on counter-terrorism, strategic intelligence and national security.

The retired naval officer, who currently serves as an Associate Professor of Global Counter-Terrorism at Chrisland University, Abeokuta, has over the years become a familiar voice on security matters, consistently providing insightful analyses on terrorism, insurgency, transnational crimes, intelligence gathering, maritime security and regional peacebuilding.

Receiving the honour with characteristic humility, Olawunmi dedicated the recognition to millions of Africans whose daily lives continue to be threatened by insecurity.

“I am deeply honoured to receive the award of Senior Fellow of the African Security Forum. I dedicate this recognition to the many Africans who continue to live each day under the weight of insecurity, fear and uncertainty. Their resilience strengthens my commitment to the pursuit of a safer, more stable and more secure Africa,” he stated.

Olawunmi also expressed profound appreciation to the Founder of the African Security Forum, Temitope Olodo JNR, for the confidence reposed in him, describing the recognition as both an honour and a greater call to service.

“I receive it with humility, gratitude and a renewed sense of responsibility.”

A Career Built on Service and Strategic Thinking

For decades, Commodore Olawunmi has remained one of Nigeria’s most authoritative security thinkers.

From his illustrious career in the Nigerian Navy to academia, policy advisory roles and international security engagements, he has consistently championed intelligence-led approaches to combating terrorism and organised crime.

His interventions have significantly enriched public discourse on some of Africa’s most pressing security challenges, including: terrorism and violent extremism; Boko Haram insurgency;
Kidnapping and banditry; maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea; Intelligence reforms; national security architecture; regional defence cooperation, and strategic leadership and governance.

Beyond operational experience, Olawunmi has distinguished himself through rigorous research, policy development and the mentoring of younger security professionals across Africa.

His lectures, publications and television commentaries have become valuable resources for policymakers, military officers, intelligence practitioners, academics and students alike.

Voice of Courage During National Security Conversations

In recent years, Commodore Olawunmi has emerged as one of Nigeria’s most sought-after analysts whenever security issues dominate national discourse.

Whether discussing insurgency, terrorism financing, intelligence failures, border security or military reforms, his analyses have consistently reflected professional depth, factual accuracy and uncommon courage.

Rather than offering sensational opinions, he has remained committed to evidence-based assessments, often calling for institutional reforms, enhanced intelligence coordination, community engagement and stronger regional cooperation in addressing Africa’s complex security threats.

His ability to simplify intricate security issues for public understanding has earned him admiration both within and outside military circles.

Recognition Beyond Nigeria

The African Security Forum noted that the Senior Fellowship recognises individuals whose outstanding contributions have strengthened Africa’s security ecosystem through: security research; scholarly publications; strategic conversations;
professional training;
workshops; and
informed media commentary.

The conferment therefore represents not merely an award but continental acknowledgement of sustained excellence and enduring impact.

For many observers, the honour reflects years of selfless commitment to building safer societies through knowledge sharing, strategic engagement and public service.

An Inspiration to Emerging Scholars

As an Associate Professor of Global Counter-Terrorism, Olawunmi has continued to bridge the gap between military practice and academic scholarship.

His classroom, conference presentations and research engagements have inspired a new generation of scholars and practitioners interested in security studies, intelligence analysis and conflict resolution.

Students and colleagues describe him as an academic who combines operational experience with intellectual rigour—qualities increasingly needed in confronting today’s rapidly evolving security environment.

A Well-Deserved Honour

The conferment of the Senior Fellowship of the African Security Forum is widely regarded as a fitting recognition for a man whose life’s work has been devoted to protecting lives, strengthening institutions and advancing informed conversations on security across Africa.

As insecurity continues to challenge many parts of the continent, voices like that of Commodore Kunle Olawunmi remain indispensable in shaping practical solutions, influencing public policy and promoting collaborative approaches to peace and stability.

His latest international recognition is therefore not only a personal achievement but also a source of pride for Nigeria, the academic community, the security profession and countless young Africans who see in him a model of excellence, integrity and patriotic service.

Indeed, the African Security Forum’s decision to elevate retired Commodore Kunle Olawunmi to the rank of Senior Fellow is a celebration of a lifetime dedicated to safeguarding humanity. It is an affirmation that true leadership is measured not merely by rank or office, but by enduring impact, intellectual contribution and unwavering commitment to the common good.

For Nigeria and Africa, the honour is richly deserved. For Commodore Kunle Olawunmi, it is another chapter in a legacy that continues to inspire confidence, command respect and illuminate the path toward a safer and more secure continent.
