Nasiru Musa Idris, a Kaduna-based businessman, has accused Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi of keeping his Moroccan wife away from him for 11 months after he took her to the cleric for counselling.

Gumi has denied the allegations, insisting the woman has returned to Morocco, and has threatened to sue Idris for defamation.

A Marriage, A Cleric, and a Disappearance

ValidViewNetwork gathered that a Kaduna-based businessman, Nasiru Musa Idris, popularly known as Albani Agege, has publicly accused prominent Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi of keeping his Moroccan wife away from him for about 11 months after he took her to the cleric for counselling.

The accusations, which have sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s religious and social circles, have escalated into a full-blown legal battle, with Idris filing multiple criminal complaints against Gumi and six others, alleging wrongful detention, theft of $20,000 and 6,000 Saudi Riyals, defamation, and forgery of court documents .

The Allegations

Speaking during an interview with RFI Hausa, Idris said he met Gumi at a pharmacy on Isa Kaita Road in Kaduna, where he had gone with his family.

He later introduced his Moroccan wife to the cleric.

According to Idris, he and Khadija Diab lawfully contracted a valid Islamic marriage in Morocco on October 21, 2024, after fulfilling all requisite legal and immigration formalities.

He said he processed all necessary documentation and brought his wife to Nigeria, where they resided together as husband and wife in Kaduna.

Idris claimed that his wife had no previous connections in Nigeria and that Gumi only became acquainted with her through him.

He said he trusted Gumi as a religious scholar and agreed to take his wife to him after the cleric offered to counsel her.

“The Moroccan girl had never known anyone in Nigeria and nobody knew her except through me. I went to seek her hand in marriage in her country, and we had an engagement with the approval of the embassy and the approval of her parents,” Idris said.

He alleged that after the meeting, his wife stopped responding to his calls.

“From then on, whenever I called, she did not answer the phone,” he claimed.

The Dispute Over Documentation

Idris said the disagreement with Gumi began over documentation relating to his marriage. He alleged that the cleric asked him to obtain another marriage certificate from a Sharia Court despite having documents already issued in connection with the marriage in Morocco and Nigeria.

“I told him that I did not agree with the marriage certificate he told me to obtain. Later, he went to the Sharia Court in Malali and asked them to issue one to him,” Idris alleged.

Idris claimed he presented various documents to support the validity of his marriage, including paperwork involving the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Nigerian embassy in Morocco, along with other documents and a police character report.

Legal Action and Criminal Complaints

ValidViewNetwork gathered that Idris has taken the matter to multiple courts.

According to court documents seen by SaharaReporters, complaints have been instituted before the Chief Magistrate Court in Barnawa, the Chief Magistrate Court in Kabala Doki, and the Sharia Court of Kaduna State.

The defendants named in the suits include Dr. Ahmad Abubakar Gumi, his wife Amal Ahmad Gumi (also known as Amal Elouakili) , his sons Mahmud Ahmad Gumi and Mubarak Ahmad Gumi, and associates Umar Shahada (Sambo) and Abubakar Abdullahi Goron Namaye.

The complaints allege offences including “criminal conspiracy, criminal trespass, theft, enticement of a married woman, defamation of character, injurious falsehood, and false statement in declaration” under the Kaduna State Penal Code Law 2017.

Additional charges include “wrongful restraint and wrongful confinement, procuration of a woman” under the Sharia Penal Code.Idris also alleged that Gumi and his associates forged court documents and gave false information to authorities.

Gumi’s Denial and Counter-Threats

Sheikh Gumi has strongly denied the allegations. Speaking to Daily Trust, the cleric insisted that the Moroccan woman was no longer in Nigeria.

“But I will take him to court for defamation against me. As for the issue of the girl, she has already left Nigeria and she is in Morocco happily with her parents,” Gumi said.

He declined to discuss the details of the marital dispute, citing an ongoing court case.

“I don’t want to say much on an issue already in court, but I will sue him for defamation,” he added.

Gumi’s personal assistant on special assignment, Malam Nasiru Ayuba (also known as Dan Agaji) , also denied that the cleric had kept Idris’ wife in his house.

Ayuba claimed that the Moroccan woman had approached Sheikh Gumi herself to seek assistance over a personal matter. He also accused Idris of attempting to damage Sheikh Gumi’s reputation through social media.

A History of Legal Battles

This is not the first time the dispute has made headlines. In July 2026, SaharaReporters reported that Idris had filed a lawsuit against Gumi over the alleged detention of his Moroccan wife and the theft of $20,000 and 6,000 Saudi Riyals.

The case has been ongoing for months, with both sides trading accusations.Idris called on Gumi to honour a police invitation and allow the matter to be investigated.

“My complaint is that he should come forward and answer the invitation of the police so that an investigation can be conducted. If he is right, there is nothing stopping him from going to the authorities to clear his name,” he said.

A Lesson for Nigerian Youths

This scandal is a reminder that power and influence can be weaponised, and that even the most trusted figures can be accused of grave misconduct.

For young Nigerians, the lesson is clear: do not place blind trust in anyone, no matter how revered they are.

The same people who demand your loyalty will never allow their own families to be subjected to the same treatment. Question everything. Verify before you trust.

And never forget that true justice is blind to status, wealth, and influence.
