Broken Dreams: Fresh Graduates Perish in Anambra Hostel Collapse

​Awka — The Federal Polytechnic, Oko, community is in deep mourning following the tragic deaths of a young couple, Vivian Chinedum and Ifeanyi Stanley, who lost their lives when a 60-room lodge collapsed in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

​The incident occurred on the night of Sunday, July 26, 2026, when the structure—known as the Elite 5-Star Hostel, situated in the Amaokpala community near the polytechnic campus—suddenly caved in, burying residents beneath tons of concrete and twisted metal.

​Emergency responders and community search teams later recovered the lifeless bodies of Vivian and Ifeanyi from the debris.

​Both victims were proud alumni of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, and were widely recognized for their entrepreneurial drive and dedication. Vivian, a talented baker, and Ifeanyi, a well-known distributor for Moniepoint Point of Sale (PoS) machines affectionately called “Don Cash,” were reportedly striving to build a stable and prosperous future together.

​According to close associates, Ifeanyi had gone to visit Vivian at her hostel room around 10:45 p.m. on the night of the disaster. What was intended as a routine, affectionate visit turned into a fatal encounter when the massive building structure failed catastrophically shortly afterward.

​The tragedy has sent shockwaves through social media, with friends, former classmates, and acquaintances flooding platforms like Facebook to express their grief.

​In a moving tribute, a friend, Ganobi Precious Ifeanyichukwu, remembered the pair as an exceptionally hardworking and promising couple whose lives were cut short in their prime.

​As local authorities and relevant agencies launch investigations into the structural integrity and causes of the collapse, the grieving families and the entire academic community are left grappling with the sudden and devastating loss of two bright young lives.
