Bone-on-Bone Reality Forces Ashley Young Into Retirement

​Former Manchester United and England star Ashley Young has revealed the brutal physical toll that forced him to hang up his boots at the age of 40, admitting he is now facing a major hip replacement operation.

​Speaking candidly on the High Performance Podcast, Young detailed how chronic joint pain turned the final stretch of his illustrious 22-year career into a grueling battle of attrition. What began as minor discomfort following a training ground fall in November ultimately exposed a total lack of cartilage, leaving his hip joint entirely bone-on-bone from years of elite-level overuse.

​”I went down on my hip in November and had an injection,” Young said. “I have always said to myself, ‘If my body is saying you need injections, there is a problem, you need to think about retiring.’ Basically, I need a hip replacement.”

​Despite specialists initially predicting he would only need the surgery a decade down the line, his condition rapidly deteriorated. Scheduled for a follow-up injection in January to help him through the final months of the season, Young suffered another heavy impact in training just a week prior.

​Faced with the stark reality of his medical charts, the utility veteran was told by doctors that his cartilage had completely worn away. Rather than wave the white flag, Young pushed the boundaries of medical advice, enduring months of agony where he was unable to train for weeks at a time.

​”I asked the specialist, ‘Are you telling me I can’t play football again? Trust me, if I get an opportunity to be back on the pitch, I’ll be back on the pitch,'” Young recalled.

​Defying medical expectations, he forced himself back into contention to travel and support the squad through their final fixtures, ultimately bowing out on a high note as his team secured a momentous promotion on the final day of the campaign.

​Young’s remarkable career spanned spells with Watford, Aston Villa, Manchester United, Inter Milan, Everton, and Ipswich Town, accumulating over 750 top-flight appearances, Premier League and Serie A titles, and 39 caps for the Three Lions. Though his playing days have reached an enforced end, his legacy as one of English football’s most resilient and adaptable competitors remains firmly cemented.
