IRESA-ADU — Growing anxiety over the infiltration of unidentified armed groups has forced communities across Iresa-Adu lands in the Surulere Local Government Area of Oyo State to convene an emergency pan-stakeholders security meeting.

The crucial summit, scheduled for Tuesday, May 26, 2026, comes in the wake of escalating criminal incursions in the Ogbomoso geopolitical zone, most notably a recent tragic raid in neighboring Oriire LGA where school children and their teachers were abducted, resulting in the brutal murder of one educator.

For months, local hunters and farmers in the suburban fringes of Iresa-Adu have raised alarms over the suspicious settlement of strange faces deep within the forests. However, localized efforts have lacked a centralized administrative anchor due to an eight-year vacancy on the revered throne of the Oba Aresa-Adu of Iresa-Adu.

A Vulnerable Border and Creeping Insecurity

The geographic vulnerability of the axis has heightened fears among residents. Both Surulere and Oriire LGAs share expansive, porous borders with Kwara State—a region that has battled a severe surge in banditry over the last two years, leaving numerous villages displaced and agricultural livelihoods decimated.

Local intelligence suggests that fleeing criminal elements from Kwara are pushing south into Oyo State’s vast forest reserves. Iresa-Adu, which holds the largest landmass in the Surulere council area, has increasingly found itself on the frontline of this creeping menace.

The area has witnessed several near-misses in recent months:

  • January 2026: A coordinated operation by operatives of the Nigerian Police Force led to the tracking and arrest of a notorious syndicate of cattle rustlers operating just outside the town center.
  • February 2026: A viral social media video captured the tense interception of unidentified armed men by local security forces in Iresa-Adu. A search of their possession yielded an assortment of dangerous weapons, including firearms, machetes, and local charms, sending shockwaves across the five local government areas comprising the Ogbomoso zone.

Mobilizing a United Front

Speaking on the urgency of the upcoming summit, the High Chief, Bara of Aresa-Adu of Iresa-Adu, emphasized that the security of the territory requires a total, collective approach.

”The general meeting slated for Tuesday will bring together the entire population of the territories of Aresa-Adu lands,” the High Chief stated. “From our youth to our elders, including traditional, community, and religious leaders, we must all sit together. This has become absolutely necessary to map out proactive measures that will prevent and completely dissuade these criminal elements from nesting on our ancestral lands.”

Community elders have echoed this sentiment, stressing that relying solely on conventional, thinly stretched state security forces may no longer suffice.

”We have to find a way to protect ourselves,” said Pa Oladipo, a prominent Iresa community elder. “We live here with our children and families, and our livelihoods are tied to these lands. The least we can do is organize ourselves to complement government efforts, ensuring our towns and villages are fortified against both internal and external incursions.”

Town criers, community radio broadcasts, and digital messaging platforms are currently being deployed aggressively across the district to ensure maximum attendance at Tuesday’s emergency assembly, which residents view as a decisive step toward self-preservation.
