Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar emphasized the role of divine providence in the acquisition of power, stating that no human can confer power except God Almighty.
This declaration followed the controversies surrounding the outcome of the 98th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held in Abuja.
Atiku’s assertion was conveyed through a WhatsApp group chat with his supporters in the country, where he shared his perspective on power dynamics.
His remarks were made against the backdrop of discussions within the PDP, including the reconstitution of committees aimed at enhancing the party’s stability.

The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, highlighted the party’s decisions during the NEC meeting, which included appointing former Akwa-Ibom State governor, Emmanuel Udom, to lead the Disciplinary Committee and maintaining former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, as head of the Reconciliation Committee.
Responding to insinuations of betrayal by some elements within the party, Atiku underscored the belief in divine authority over power, stating, “There is God. It is God that gives power, not anybody.”
In the same vein, Governor Taofeek Arapaja addressed calls for the suspension of party members accused of anti-party activities, clarifying that such matters fall within the purview of internal mechanisms like the reconciliation and disciplinary committees.
The survival of acting PDP National Chairman, Umar Damagum, amidst discussions about his replacement was attributed to the intervention of PDP governors who sought to maintain stability within the party.
The NEC meeting deferred the decision on Damagum’s successor until August 15, acknowledging the need for broader consultations and internal consensus-building.
