The Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is set to convene a critical caucus meeting today, Monday, April 13, 2026, as the party begins to lay the groundwork for the 2027 general elections.
The meeting, scheduled for 4:00 PM at the party’s state secretariat in Abeokuta, comes at a pivotal moment for the ruling party as it seeks to consolidate its influence and harmonize internal interests. In a statement released on Sunday, the State Party Chairman, Chief Yemi Sanusi, emphasized that the gathering is designed to bolster party cohesion, review recent political shifts, and chart a definitive path forward.
Navigating the Road to 2027
While the official agenda focuses on “party unity,” insiders suggest that the primary objective is to establish the framework for selecting candidates for the next election cycle. A party chieftain, speaking on the condition of anonymity, revealed that the caucus will deliberate on the modalities for upcoming primaries.
“The meeting is essentially about aligning our strategies for 2027,” the source stated. “The party will be evaluating the efficacy of consensus arrangements in certain constituencies versus the possibility of adopting direct primaries. The goal is to ensure that every major stakeholder is on the same page before the heat of the campaign season begins.”
A Gathering of Powerhouses
The meeting is expected to host the “who’s who” of Ogun State politics. Attendance is strictly governed by Section 12:1.0 of the APC Constitution, ensuring that only recognized statutory members are present to deliberate on these sensitive matters.
The high-powered guest list includes:
- The State Chairman and past state chairmen.
- Serving and former Governors and Deputy Governors of the state.
- Current and past members of the National Assembly.
- Principal officers and members of the State House of Assembly.
- Members of the National and Zonal Executive Committees from the state.
- The Secretary to the State Government (SSG).
- State-level leaders for women, youth, and Persons Living with Disabilities (PLWD).
Balancing Interests
The push for a unified front is seen as a proactive move to prevent the internal frictions that often characterize primary season. By bringing together past and present leadership, the APC aims to bridge generational gaps and reconcile the various political camps within the Gateway State.
As the 2027 race begins to loom over the political landscape, today’s resolutions in Abeokuta are expected to set the tone for how the ruling party manages its transition and maintains its dominance in the state.
