The All Progressives Congress in Ogun State is facing a critical test of party cohesion as internal friction deepens following its consensus primaries.
Discontent has spread across multiple fronts, highlighted by high-profile defections, legal challenges, and fallout from key ticket distributions ahead of the 2027 general elections. Prof Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, exited the ruling party after losing her bid for the governorship ticket, subsequently securing the opposition Peoples Democratic Party ticket for the Ogun Central Senatorial District.
Simultaneously, tension persists between Governor Dapo Abiodun and former Governor Gbenga Daniel. Supporters of Daniel remain aggrieved over the Ogun East Senatorial ticket awarded to Abiodun, raising concerns within the party about potential protest votes.
Further complicating the political landscape, governorship aspirant Abayomi Hunye has rejected claims that he stepped down from the race. Hunye has approached the court to contest the primary results—which recorded zero votes for him—and has unveiled a running mate, even as the party leadership maintains he has been suspended and faces allegations of impersonation. Traditional rulers in the state have urged prompt reconciliation to prevent the disputes from escalating and undermining the party’s electoral standing.
While state party spokespersons maintain that internal friction is normal and being managed within constitutional boundaries, political analysts argue that healing these post-primary wounds will be vital for the APC’s success in maintaining its political dominance in the state.
