​GLASGOW — The ghost of Uganda’s turbulent history echoed loudly through the Scottish Event Campus on Wednesday as Aziz Abdul, grandson of the late dictator Idi Amin, crashed out of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in extraordinary fashion.

​Competing in the super-heavyweight (90+kg) division, the 25-year-old Ugandan boxer was disqualified in the third and final round of his quarter-final bout against England’s Damar Thomas after launching a blatant headbutt.

​The fiery exit shattered Abdul’s quest to secure Uganda’s first Commonwealth boxing medal since Auckland in 1990. However, the real drama unfolded after the referee halted the contest, when Abdul unleashed an angry, expletive-laden tirade targeting the judges and alleging racial bias.

​”I am black African. He is in his homeland,” Abdul ranted to reporters, claiming that English fighters receive preferential treatment from officials. “When you watch the previous fights of England, their boxers create a lot of fouls… I land a heavy punch on him, they never count. Instead of counting they deduct me.”

​Insisting that the decisive head movement was entirely accidental and driven by desperation, Abdul added, “He was the person they wanted to win. He was the winner before. I knew if I did not get a knockout, I could not win the fight.”

​The clash had drawn intense media scrutiny even before the opening bell. In the build-up to the match, Abdul openly told reporters that he aspired to become the new “King of Scotland” — a direct, provocative homage to his notorious grandfather. Idi Amin, who seized power in a 1971 military coup and earned the moniker “The Butcher of Uganda” during a brutal regime responsible for an estimated half-a-million deaths, had infamously declared himself the “King of Scotland” in 1976.

​Abdul, who stated he never met his grandfather, walked a fine line regarding his family legacy during media interviews, acknowledging both positive and negative historical accounts before shifting focus to the ring. But his aggressive fighting style proved his undoing in Glasgow. Having already accumulated warnings in the opening two rounds for persistent rule-breaking and punching on the break, Abdul’s tournament life was decisively brought to an end by the referee.

​Commonwealth Sport officials swiftly rejected Abdul’s allegations of corruption and systemic partiality. Dr. Donald Rukare, president of Commonwealth Sport, dismissed the claims as reactionary heat-of-the-moment frustration.

​”We at Commonwealth Sport believe that every athlete is treated fairly in a non-discriminatory manner,” Rukare stated. “As far as we’re concerned, we have a good relationship with World Boxing, the athletes are treated fairly, so it was a fair playing field.”
