Airport Cabs vs. E-Hailing: The Nigerian Ride War Reignites

​The friction between traditional airport transport and app-based ride-hailing services has intensified, following a public call by a FAAN taxi driver for the outright prohibition of Uber and Bolt across Nigeria.

​In a widely circulated video capturing the growing animosity within the transport sector, the driver—who revealed he transitioned from driving for Bolt to operating under the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Taxi scheme—contended that current digital fare structures are economically unsustainable for operators. He pointed to operational realities, specifically citing a standard ₦6,000 airport fare that he argues gets severely depleted after accounting for escalating fuel prices and the commission deductions exacted by platform operators.

​”I feel like the ban of Bolt and Uber at the airport is long overdue. I think they should be banned in Nigeria,” the driver stated, framing the platform models as exploitative under current macroeconomic conditions.

The driver defended the FAAN Taxi framework as a superior model tailored to the unique logistics of airport operations. Furthermore, he highlighted that official airport transport enforces rigorous compliance standards concerning vehicle age and mechanical condition—benchmarks he suggests are inconsistently applied across mainstream e-hailing networks.
