A Nigerian Air Force (NAF) General Court Martial on Tuesday delivered a death sentence by hanging to Aircraftman Benard Kalu for the murder of his colleague and girlfriend, Corporal Oladipupo S. A.
The court found Kalu guilty of fatally shooting Corporal Oladipupo at her residence within the Air Force Base in Makurdi. The incident occurred following Kalu’s forceful entry into her quarters, allegedly due to suspicions of her involvement with another man.
The prosecution detailed an eight-count charge against Kalu, including murder, housebreaking, attempted murder of the man present in the apartment, failure to perform military duty, loss of service property, disobedience of a service order, and prejudice to service discipline. While Kalu pleaded not guilty to all charges, the court heard from 13 prosecution witnesses and three defense witnesses, including the accused.
Despite the defense’s argument that the prosecution had not proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt and a plea for leniency based on Kalu’s status as a first-time offender and family breadwinner, the court found him guilty on six of the eight counts.
Group Captain Elisha Bindul, the President of the court, delivered the sentence of death by hanging, which is subject to confirmation by the appropriate convening authority.
