​NEW ORLEANS — Facing severe operational strain and persistent staffing shortages, the Orleans Parish Communications District (OPCD) has integrated an artificial intelligence triage tool into its emergency response infrastructure.

​While viral online reports initially sparked fierce public pushback—leading critics to falsely claim the city was replacing human operators entirely—city officials and emergency leaders have clarified that the technology serves a highly narrow, specific function: managing redundant calls during major motor vehicle accidents.

​Processing upwards of 1,000 emergency calls daily, New Orleans dispatch centers experience heavy surges during rush-hour traffic incidents, where a single crash can trigger dozens of simultaneous, repetitive reports.

​Under the new deployment, the AI-powered triage system (developed by emergency tech firm Carbyne) activates only under strict operational parameters:

​”Every 911 center in the country is dealing with the reality of tighter budgets and inability to reach full staffing even with funding to do so,” Fasold stated. “We have found this AI triage tool, used specifically for the scenario outlined above involving motor vehicle accidents, to be an extremely positive use of the technology to make the best use of our staff’s very limited time.”
