The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed on Monday announced his voluntary resignation from the commission.
Professor Rasheed, who stated this to journalists on Monday in Abuja, said he had spent seven years as the Executive Secretary of the Commission.
The NUC boss who did not state the reason for his resignation, however noted that he would be returning to the Bayero University Kano to continue his job as a lecturer.
Rasheed’s resignation announcement came after approving the issuance of a provisional license to the third Kogi State-owned University.
The new university is to be located at Kabba local government area of the State.
Presenting the letter of approval to Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello, in Abuja on Monday, the Executive Secretary of NUC, Abubakar Rasheed, said the university will be the 62nd state government-owned university in the country.
Rasheed, therefore, notified the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) of the establishment of the institution.
He said, “On behalf of the Commission, with effect from 26th June, 2023, Kogi State University Kabba has been recognised as the 62 state-owned university in the country.”
He described the new university as his last baby in the Commission, having granted approvals to numerous universities in the country during his seven-year administration.
Under the tenure of Prof. Rasheed as NUC executive secretary, the commission approved the highest number of private universities.
The university system also witnessed the highest number of industrial actions.
