Abiodun, Salako Lead Tributes as Yewa Grand Chief Imam is Laid to Rest at 98

IGAN ALADE – The remains of the President of the League of Imams and Alfas in Ogun State and the Grand Chief Imam of Yewaland, Sheikh Sikirulai Babalola, were interred on Sunday amidst a downpour of tributes from the highest levels of government and the religious community.

​The revered cleric, who passed away on Saturday at the age of 98, was buried in his hometown of Igan Alalade, Yewa North Local Government Area, following a career of spiritual leadership that spanned several decades.

​A Pillar of Unity

​Governor Dapo Abiodun, who attended the funeral rites in person, described the late Sheikh as a “man of God and a good man,” noting that his transition marks the loss of a foremost spiritual compass in the state.

​”Sheikh Babalola was a devoted Muslim and a respected Islamic scholar who rose to the pinnacle of leadership within the Muslim Ummah,” the Governor remarked. “He was a man of integrity, generosity, and faith whose service to humanity left behind enduring legacies.”

​Abiodun emphasized that the cleric’s role as both the Grand Chief Imam of Yewaland and the President of the League of Imams made him one of the most influential voices for peace and religious harmony in Ogun State.

​Defender of Yewaland

​The Minister of State for Health, Dr. Iziaq Kunle Salako, also paid his respects, highlighting the Sheikh’s unwavering commitment to the progress of the Yewa people. He described the late octogenarian as an “upright man” who served as a rallying point for younger generations and a consistent advocate for the interests of the land.

​”His death, though coming at a ripe old age, remains a significant blow to the community. He consistently defended the interest of Yewaland and looked out for the welfare of all,” Salako added.

​A Call to Impactful Living

​During the funeral lecture, Dr. Raji Akano, Head of Arabic Studies at the Federal College of Education, Abeokuta, urged the congregation to reflect on the inevitability of death. He noted that while the Chief Imam had successfully completed his earthly assignment, the living must remain conscious of their impact on society.

​Legacy of Leadership

​Deputy Governor Noimot Salako-Oyedele, in a separate message, echoed the sentiment that the Sheikh’s passing marked the end of a remarkable era. She credited him with providing fatherly counsel and spiritual guidance to countless individuals across Egba, Ijebu, Remo, and Yewa regions.

​The late Sheikh Sikirulai Babalola is survived by numerous children, grandchildren, and a vast network of students and spiritual followers. As the state observes his passing, many describe his life as a masterclass in religious tolerance and community service.
