Academic activities at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), in Ondo State, have been brought to a standstill as the local chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has officially commenced an indefinite strike. The industrial action, which took effect at 11:59 p.m. on Friday, July 10, 2026, is a direct response to the non-payment of lecturers’ salaries for May and June 2026.
In a formal notice issued by the union’s branch chairperson, Comrade Bolu Oshodi, the union declared that the withdrawal of services is “total, comprehensive and indefinite.” The decision was solidified during a congress meeting held on Friday, where members reaffirmed previous resolutions from April 28 and June 18, 2026, regarding the protest against the state government and university management’s failure to meet payment obligations.
The strike is set to severely disrupt the institution’s academic calendar. Most notably, the second-semester examinations, which were slated to begin on July 20, now hang in the balance. With the suspension of all official duties—including lectures, student supervision, and administrative meetings—the university community is bracing for significant delays unless a resolution is reached rapidly between the university authorities, the Ondo State Government, and the union leadership.
Amidst this local crisis, the union also announced that the National Visitation Team of ASUU is scheduled to arrive at the Akungba-Akoko campus on Monday, July 13. While the primary purpose of this visit is to address the 2025 agreement signed between the national body of ASUU and the federal government, it is expected that the ongoing salary dispute at the state-owned institution will feature prominently in the discussions.
As of now, the university administration has yet to release an official statement regarding the timeline for the disbursement of the outstanding salary arrears. Students and stakeholders are advised to monitor official channels for updates on the potential rescheduling of the upcoming examination period.
