In a story that has gripped social media and drawn international attention, a 3-year-old Black soccer prodigy from Florida found himself at the centre of a heated dispute that ended with police at a children’s match — and a flood of support that has already raised more than $25,000 for his future.
Nevada Pierre, who trains daily and posts dazzling clips under the handle @nevadaney10, was playing in an i9 Sports recreational league game at Martin Luther King Jr. Park in Winter Park on Saturday, October 24. The toddler, who has been dribbling since he was roughly 10 months old and regularly faces children two years older, was reportedly lighting up the pitch once again. Videos show him weaving past opponents, holding possession, and slotting home goals with remarkable control for his age.
His parents say he has scored more than 40 goals across just five games this season.
According to his mother, Martasia Griffin, and father, Don Pierre, opposing parents grew frustrated that other children could not take the ball from him. League officials, they claim, repeatedly restricted his playing time and ultimately sought to remove him because he was simply too advanced. “They’re mad at my son because he actually plays soccer. They’re literally kicking him out of this place because he’s good at soccer,” Griffin told officers.
League director Thomas Hayes told responding Winter Park police a different story. On body-camera footage released by the department, Hayes acknowledged the boy’s talent in striking terms: “The kid is good. He’s great. Really good… He’s really advanced compared to the other ones. He’s scoring a lot of goals, but he’s pushing the kids.” Hayes said the parents had become disruptive after Nevada was taken out of the game and that he wanted them removed from the park so a refund of the roughly $300 registration fee could be processed.
Police bodycam and 911 audio show officers treating the matter as a civil dispute between adults. No one was arrested, issued a trespass warning, or forced to leave. The family was already preparing to depart when officers arrived and cooperated fully. The Winter Park Police Department later stressed that the call was not about the child’s on-field ability. i9 Sports has said it is reviewing the incident and has contacted the family.
The viral videos — showing both Nevada’s skill and the subsequent confrontation — ignited widespread outrage. Critics accused adults of punishing excellence and questioned the involvement of police at a preschool-age recreational game. High-profile voices, including children’s entertainer Ms. Rachel and former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III, publicly backed the family. Former professional striker Eddie Johnson has invited Nevada to join his Orlando-based youth training programme in January.
Griffin launched a GoFundMe titled “Support Nevada’s Soccer Journey.” Within a short time it surpassed $25,000 from hundreds of donors (reports earlier on Tuesday put the figure above $20,000 and climbing). The funds are intended to cover registration, training, equipment, uniforms, travel, and opportunities in a more supportive environment so the experience does not define the little boy’s path. While some early social media posts floated the idea of sending him to FC Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, the official campaign focuses on practical next steps closer to home.
Griffin has said the episode left her son traumatised. He still loves soccer but no longer wants to return to that particular field and has expressed fear that he did something wrong. “What should have been a happy childhood moment became heartbreaking,” she wrote on the fundraiser page.
What began as a Saturday-morning youth match has become a global conversation about talent, sportsmanship, parental behaviour, and how adults respond when a child stands out. For now, the world’s response has been clear: Nevada Pierre’s extraordinary ability has found far more champions than critics.
