Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will travel to Moscow next week for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has announced.
The Pezeshkian Putin Moscow meeting will follow up on discussions held during Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s visit to Tehran earlier this week, ValidViewNetwork reports.
THE ANNOUNCEMENT
“Next week, these discussions and consultations will continue in Moscow with the participation of the presidents of both countries,” Araghchi said in a post on Instagram.
According to Iran’s Tasnim News Agency, Pezeshkian will attend the Gas Exporting Countries Summit on October 27.
The two leaders will discuss economic cooperation and “geopolitical issues”.
THE CONTEXT
Iran and Russia signed a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty in January 2025 during Pezeshkian’s visit to Moscow.
The agreement covers political, economic, security, defense, energy and transportation cooperation, ValidViewNetwork reports.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, relations between Moscow and Tehran have deepened, with both countries facing severe Western sanctions.
Putin said earlier this month that Russia was ready to participate in mediation to end the war in the Middle East, which was triggered by US and Israeli strikes on Iran in February.
WHY IT MATTERS
The meeting comes at a critical moment for both countries. Iran is facing mounting pressure from the United States and Israel, with negotiations stalled and the threat of renewed military action looming.
Russia, isolated by Western sanctions, has found in Iran a strategic partner willing to defy the West.
The Moscow summit is a signal that the Iran-Russia axis is not merely a temporary alliance of convenience. It is a long-term strategic partnership. Two nations under sanctions, two leaders with few friends in the West.
In Moscow, Pezeshkian and Putin will reaffirm a partnership forged in isolation. The world will be watching.
