“THEY NEED TINUBU EYEGLASSES”: REMI TINUBU MOCKS NIGERIANS WHO DON’T SEE PROGRESS

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has mocked Nigerians who do not see the country making progress under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, saying that they need what she called “Bola Tinubu eyeglasses,” ValidViewNetwork reports.

The remark was made on Friday while inaugurating the Abuja headquarters of the PBAT Door-to-Door Movement, a grassroots group mobilising support for the President’s re-election in 2027.

THE REMARK

“So things are happening in Nigeria, except, you know, those who don’t see; maybe we’ll give them some, you know, Bola Tinubu eyeglasses. We are doing that, JigiBola,” she said.

Jigi-Bola is an eye-care programme introduced by Tinubu in 2001 when he was governor of Lagos State. The initiative provided free eye screening, eyeglasses and surgery, and was relaunched by the Lagos State Government in 2021.

THE EVIDENCE

Mrs Tinubu pointed to changes at Nigerian airports as evidence of progress, saying she wanted to travel more quickly, ValidViewNetwork reports.

“I want to get to the airport. I want to travel, you know, so quickly. And you can see our airports too are changing,” she said .

She also expressed her hope for the future. “I want to leave Aso Rock, in 2031, by the grace of God, and enter a Nigeria that me as a 70-something-year-old woman will enjoy,” she said.

WHY IT MATTERS

The First Lady’s remark is a window into the mindset of the Presidency as the 2027 campaign begins.

For Remi Tinubu, the progress is visible—in airports, in infrastructure, in the general direction of the country.

For many Nigerians, the progress is not visible at all, as food prices soar, fuel costs remain high, and purchasing power collapses.

Her joke about “eyeglasses” may have been intended as lighthearted. But it risks sounding dismissive to citizens who are struggling.

The First Lady sees a changing Nigeria. Millions of Nigerians see a country that has not changed enough. The 2027 election will determine whose vision prevails.

And the ballot box will be the final arbiter.
