Argentine captain Lionel Messi has received the 2026 Princesa de Asturias Award for Sport, describing it as an honour that goes beyond his football achievements.
The Award ceremony was held on Friday at the Teatro Campoamor in Oviedo, Spain, in the presence of the Spanish royal family.
THE CEREMONY
Messi received the award with a broad smile, while his partner, Antonela Roccuzzo, looked visibly moved.
The event began after 1:30 p.m. Argentine time, with the King and Queen of Spain and Princess Leonor in attendance. Princess Leonor delivered her customary speech, accompanied by words from King Felipe VI.
THE CITATION
The jury praised Messi for being the most decorated player in history and for his exceptional sporting career, his incomparable talent, and his outstanding charitable work to promote access to education and healthcare for disadvantaged children.
“Because he has earned the respect and admiration of millions of people thanks to his constancy, humility and commitment to collective play,” the citation read .
THE HISTORIC FIRST
With this award, Messi became the first footballer in history to receive the Princesa de Asturias Award individually. Before the gala, Messi met with Princess Leonor at the Hotel de la Reconquista.
The heir to the throne presided over the reception of the laureates alone for the first time in the history of the awards .
WHY IT MATTERS
The Princesa de Asturias Award is one of the most prestigious honours in the Spanish-speaking world.
It has previously been awarded to figures including Mario Vargas Llosa, Lula da Silva, and Quino.
Messi’s recognition places him in that company, not just as a footballer but as a global figure whose impact extends beyond the pitch.
ValidViewNetwork congratulates Messi on this well-deserved honour.
