The Nasarawa State Police Command has arrested three suspects in Keana Local Government Area for the alleged cultivation and sale of marijuana after a raid on their hideout.
The marijuana cultivation arrests were disclosed by the command’s spokesperson, SP Ramhan Nansel, in a statement made available to journalists in Lafia on Friday .
THE ARREST
The suspects were identified as Aondaver Dominic, Sylvanus Umoor and Peter Tar.
According to Nansel, they were arrested on Thursday, October 22, 2026, at about 1 p.m. by police operatives attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Lafia, during an anti-crime patrol at Sabongida Bature and Gidan Kparev villages in Kadarko, Keana LGA.
“Upon sighting the police operatives, the suspects attempted to flee but were apprehended. Quantities of dry leaves suspected to be Indian hemp were recovered during the operation,” Nansel said.
THE DISCOVERY
Further investigation led the operatives to a garden behind the suspects’ residence, where marijuana was allegedly being cultivated.
“Freshly harvested leaves suspected to be marijuana were recovered from the garden. All recovered exhibits have been secured for further investigation,” Nansel added.
THE HANDOVER
The Commissioner of Police, Nasarawa State Command, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, ordered a thorough investigation into the matter and directed that the suspects, alongside the recovered exhibits, be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and necessary action .
The CP also charged officers and men of the Command to sustain the operational tempo and intensify efforts towards combating all forms of criminality across the state.
WHY IT MATTERS
The arrest of three suspects for marijuana cultivation is a significant blow to the drug trade in Nasarawa State.Cultivation is the first link in the supply chain. If the police can disrupt cultivation, they can reduce the availability of the drug in the market.
The handover to the NDLEA signals that the case will be pursued through the proper legal channels. Whether it results in prosecution and conviction remains to be seen.
