PHILADELPHIA — A former University of Pennsylvania communications professor known for teaching courses on free expression was arrested last week in Center City after staging a public protest against sidewalk delivery robots.
Carolyn Marvin, a professor emeritus at the Annenberg School for Communication, was taken into custody on October 14 on the 1200 block of Filbert Street. Police responded to a report of criminal mischief involving a delivery device, ultimately issuing Marvin a criminal violation notice for disorderly conduct.
The incident unfolded as Marvin repeatedly stood in the path of an autonomous Uber Eats delivery robot, halting its progress along the sidewalk. The company introduced its sidewalk delivery fleet to Philadelphia earlier this year in March.
In a statement provided to the Daily Pennsylvanian, Marvin framed her demonstration as a direct defense of low-wage workers and a critique of corporate automation.
”I oppose ruthless corporations casting aside human workers they don’t want to pay—in this case delivery folks at the bottom of the wage pile—to enrich their bottom line,” Marvin wrote. “These real people are workers with no defense against these corporations except our care for their situation.”
She also criticized the aesthetic design of the machines, arguing that their appearance serves to mask the societal costs of technological displacement.
”These cute little robots flashing googly hearts distract us from thinking about the real people they displace,” she noted, drawing a parallel to wider anxieties surrounding the rapid proliferation of artificial intelligence and data collection.
Marvin asserted that public spaces should remain accessible venues for citizens to contest corporate practices. She told local media that she intends to contest the disorderly conduct charge in court, anchoring her defense on First Amendment grounds.
During her tenure at the University of Pennsylvania, Marvin taught a course titled “History and Theory of Freedom of Expression,” which explored the boundary between speech and physical action. Reflecting on her academic career, she remarked that she hoped former students might appreciate the alignment between her teachings and her actions.
”I loved teaching it and the students who took it,” Marvin said. “I like imagining that some of them would have been out there with me.”
In the wake of her arrest, Marvin has urged consumers to abandon automated delivery platforms and actively patronize businesses that rely on human couriers.
