CANNES, France — In a major stride toward accelerating Africa’s digital transformation, the Federal Government-owned Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) has officially finalized a landmark agreement with European aerospace manufacturer Thales Alenia Space to construct the NigComSat-2A geostationary telecommunications satellite.
The pact was formally executed on September 14, 2026, in Cannes, France. The development marks a pivotal evolution in Nigeria’s orbital infrastructure, succeeding earlier generations of space assets to bridge the connectivity divide across Sub-Saharan Africa.
Expanding Pan-African Horizons
Built on Thales Alenia Space’s robust Spacebus B2 platform, the high-capacity NigComSat-2A will feature a launch mass of nearly four metric tonnes. Its operational footprint is engineered to span West, Central, and Southern Africa, bringing modern telecommunication services directly to regions where terrestrial fiber and ground networks remain sparse or difficult to deploy.
The spacecraft is designed to deliver a comprehensive suite of digital utilities, including high-quality television broadcasting, reliable high-speed broadband internet, voice calls, and heavy data streaming. With an expected in-orbit operational lifespan exceeding 15 years, the satellite aims to heavily reinforce digital inclusion, drive entrepreneurship, and stimulate economic growth in underserved communities.
Strategic Vision for Digital Transformation
Speaking on the partnership, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NIGCOMSAT Ltd, Nkechi Egerton-Idehen, underscored the monumental impact the project holds for the continent.
“The signing of this contract represents a bold step in Nigeria’s journey toward digital transformation,” Egerton-Idehen stated. “NigComSat-2A will not only strengthen our nation’s satellite communications capacity but also expand access to reliable broadband and digital services for millions of Africans, especially in underserved and remote communities.”
She added that the collaboration embodies NIGCOMSAT’s core mandate to foster technological innovation and reinforce digital sovereignty across Africa.
Hervé Derrey, President and Chief Executive Officer of Thales Alenia Space—a joint venture owned 67 percent by Thales and 33 percent by Leonardo—expressed gratitude for Nigeria’s continued trust in the manufacturer’s engineering capabilities.
“The NigComSat-2A geostationary satellite will enable NIGCOMSAT to strengthen its competitive position by delivering reliable, high-quality services that meet the growing demand for connectivity and digital content worldwide,” Derrey remarked. “This announcement also underscores the success of our Spacebus B2 product line, renowned for its reliability, robustness, and time-to-market efficiency.”
Bolstering Nigeria’s Space Legacy
Established on April 4, 2006, under the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, NIGCOMSAT Ltd has long spearheaded the country’s ambitions in orbital communication. Its current flagship asset, the NigComSat-1R satellite launched in December 2011, historically broke ground as the first of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa.
With NigComSat-2A joining the fleet, experts note that Nigeria is well-positioned to offer greater network resilience, flexibility, and expanded bandwidth capacity, cementing the nation’s role as a powerhouse in the African digital economy.
